FINAL YEAR PROJECT (NANYANG POLYTECHNIC)

2 Oct 2007

My FYP team mates are currently doing a research on psychiatric day centres(IMH) in Singapore. In fact, we are honoured to be part of this team as it is the 3rd research done on the existing day centres which are run by IMH. Our title is Effects of attendance rate to psychiatric day centres of Institute of Mental Health, Singapore on hospital admission patterns and vocational status: A comparative study.

We are still in the 2nd phase of data collection. This research is estimated to be completed (PPT slides only) by end of November and it will be presented to the OT department of the institute first before presenting it in the Student Conference, which will be held on 12th January 2008.

Wish us luck and do check out on updates of this project.

5 Oct 2007

Now that we have finished the third week of the school vacation, this also means that we have done 3 weeks of data collection for phase 2. Much have been done. We tediously looked through the medical records, 2 digital records and even went to the day centres themselves to find out more information through their documentation. All data. Most of them are numbers. As we are not trained to be an accountant, all of us have blurred vision by the end of the day. One excel file after another.

Another update was our meet up with a statistician on the 4th October 2007. We were overjoyed when she mentioned that our data are sufficient. Yes! But the confusion started when she guided us through the method to analyse data using SPSS.  Oh wow, that was a challenge. I can only catch and follow through 50% of what she mentioned. Half the time I was confused, not knowing what she was talking. All the technical terms sounds familiar yet alien to me. Guess it’s time to revise the Statistics elective module.

So that’s all for Week 3 of Data Collection Phase 2 :)

17 Oct 2007

It has been a challenging week. Red tape is hindering our process of data collection. It’s definately one of our setbacks. We are aiming to finish data collection process by the end of the month. Will we be able to make it? Yes, we must! We will try all means to get the data. Of course, legally and ethically.

26 Oct 2007

This calls for a celebration! We have completed our data collection phase! And now moving on to data codings and analysis. But before that, let’s go celebrate!

29 Nov 2007

It was our last consultation with the statistician for our project. This means that we have completed the stage of data analysis phase! Hurray! We were all so excited as we are proceeding smoothly. Things to be completed by this month will be writing the results and discussion part of our presentation, writing of the report itself, presenting to IMH and preparing for our Student Conference. I’m full of joy now :)

Another stage of the research process completed - data analysis, conclusion, recommendations and future implications. Basically, we are done with our Powerpoint presentation. :) Anyway, we will be presenting to the OT department in Institute of Mental Health this Thursday on our indings. Wish us luck!

4 Jan 2008

Happy New Year! It’s 2008 and we are gearing towards refining our Powerpoint slides for the student conference, which will be held on the 19th Jan 2008. Excited? Yes, we are! We have just finished with the first rehearsal. Predicted time to complete presenting our presentation was 26 minutes. Expected duration of presentation is 20 minutes. We need to practise once more as a group, and edit our scripts to ensure clear and precise presentation. Next rehearsal will be on this Wednesday, after our last exam paper. Till then!

9th Jan 2008

2nd rehearsal: Personally, I feel that our team performed better than the previous rehearsal. We managed to cut down on the unnecessary contents so that more focus could be given to the more relevant findings. 21 minutes was the amount of time taken to complete the presentation. :)

Well, on a personal note, more improvments could be done on presentation skills. I tend to read the script that I had prepared. A coursemate had given me some feedback that although I am engaging with the audience verbally, I did otherwise in terms of eye contact. Hence, this can be an area of improvement for the next rehearsal, which is a full-dressed one, on this Saturday.

Meanwhile, we will be presenting to Bonnie, the Occupational Therapist in IMH tomorrow to seek further advice from her. Hope everything goes well!

10 Jan 2008

Rehearsal with Bonnie was very fruitful today, with the discussions on improvements made in the conclusion section so as to make it clearer and concise. Of course, more impactful too.

I heard from my FYP mate about comments made by our manager with regards to our presentation. Feedback regarding the results-discussion sections, as well as the conclusion section had been pointed out and will be undergoing some revamping tomorrow.

And so, tomorrow’s agenda is to do some revamption on the sections mentioned above, and rehearse again as a group.

GO DC TEAM GO!

12 Jan 2008

Full-dress rehearsal. I can see that each group’s presentation is getting better with practise. And of course, my group, the DC team put up our best effort despite the setbacks such as:

  • misalignment of layout of some slides
  • 2 missing slides
  • colours of some charts which appeared to be very dark in the screen

Whatever it is, we managed to pull through it. Chanegs will be made and most importantly, a check on all slides before the real presentation on the upcoming Saturday’s Student Conference is a must to ensure absence of any technical error for our presentation.

Well, good news is that we managed to present it within 20 minutes. In fact, 18 minutes to be exact. Well done DC team! Next rehearsal will be on Tuesday and Friday. And yes, after work. All the way, mates!

19 Jan 2008

The day had finally came! 14th Annual Student Conference was here. All went well except so some screw-ups during the Q and A. Argh! But since it was over, MOVE ON! We did a good job (Liu and Goh, 2008). Now let’s finish up the report which is due next Friday.

The DC Team

21 Jan 2008

The DC team, except for Elaine who is in Hong Kong, met up again at SMU to do final discussions on the ‘DISCUSSION’ section of the report. Work was shared amongst ourselves and we will look forward to the finalised report.

25 Jan 2008

FYP report handed in. Well done, DC team! You are the best!
