Literature Review: Efficacy of Shoulder Slings and Supports on Shoulder Subluxation

This is the title I have chosen for one of my assignments this semester. From the literature I have read, the following paragraphs, which are parts of my report, summarising the efficacy of external shoulder supports on shoulder subluxation.

Shoulder subluxation can be corrected to a certain extent by using appropriate type of shoulder slings, supports and/or orthoses. Thus, it is imperative for patients to try on several support devices to find out the best device to correct shoulder subluxation (Zorowitz et al., 1995). In addition, prior to prescription of support devices, other considerations, which include configuration n orientation of slings, general design features to prevent over and under correction (Spaulding, 1999) and aesthetics (Dajpratham et al., 2006), ease of application (Turner-Stokes & Jackson, 2002; Dajpratham et al., 2006; Zorowitz et al., 1995; Williams et al., 1988), cost effectiveness (Dajpratham et al., 2006), patient acceptance, comfort, maintenance (Williams et al., 1988), and any contraindications (Zorowitz et al., 1995), should be taken into account.

As the existing literature are based only on the immediate and short term effects on the use of the external support devices (Zorowitz et al., 1995; Dieruf et al., 2005; Williams et al., 1988), further studies can be done to explore the benefits and effects of long term use of these devices. In addition, due to the lack of high-level evidence about the efficacy of shoulder supports on shoulder subluxation (Foongchomcheay et al., 2005; Boyd et al., 1999), more randomized controlled trials can be done to strengthen the available evidence in this topic.
